About the event

Carver Camp, name after renowned scientist George Washington Carver, was established by the Metropolitan Baptist District of Great Detroit as a rural, religious and recreational campground in the early 1940s. The 385-acre property in Grass Lake Township was originally owned by the Soper family, among the first pioneers in Grass Lake. The historic barn on the northern edge of the property reflects construction techniques commonly used in the mid-to-late1800s. Much of the land was never cleared for farming and remains in the pristine condition it was in when pioneer first arrived. Some trees on the property are 200+years old. Camp administrators point to the camp’s historic namesake as a role model who accomplished much with limited resources.

This historic marker, the first in Grass Lake Township for the Jackson County Michigan Historical Society, was researched by JCMHS, produced by partner Fritz Signs, and funded by the Metropolitan Baptist District of Detroit and JCMHS.
